Family Literacy: A Profile of a Social Program in the Era of Welfare Reform
by Wilma Clark
Authors note: The names of persons and places in "Chandler" are pseudonyms. However, the stories of the family literacy participants are authentic.
This publication is dedicated to the memory of Barbara (Bobby) Kernan, whose friendly, positive manner and commitment to literacy inspired all who worked with her. Bobby served as a volunteer tutor for Literacy Volunteers of America in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Naples, Florida. One of her favorite assignments was tutoring a mother enrolled in a Family Literacy program. A few weeks before cancer claimed her life, Bobby told her daughter, "Literacy was my best work."
Bobbys involvement in literacy exemplifies the vital role of dedicated volunteers in a collaborative effort.
