Verizon Family Literacy & Technology

LVA/Verizon Family Literacy & Technology Initiative

Literacy is more than reading and writing. It is interwoven with other social welfare and family issues. Working with families who often face hardships beyond low literacy skills is not always easy, but the work is rewarding.

"We help families build literacy skills, and this often becomes a starting place to create new more positive family patterns," explains the coordinator of an LVA family literacy site.

In 1994, with the support of the Verizon Foundation, LVA established its first Family Learning/Technology Centers. Each Center incorporated leading-edge technology to facilitate literacy education for parents and children. This project offered families the unparalled opportunity to improve both literacy and technology skills.

The more than 40 Verizon Family Learning/Technology Centers established nationwide were a testimony to Verizons contributions of more than $1 million in financial and technological support for The Verizon/LVA Family Literacy/Technology Initiative.
