Featured Student of the Month: Peter Aragon January, 2002
I am Peter Aragon.
I have been involved with Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe, NM, for six years. I was at a second to third grade reading level.
This program has not cost me a dime, only my time and determination to learn. They have tutored me in my reading and writing skills, and without this program I would not be able to do many of the things I do now.
A friend was involved with Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe, and I thought to myself, if she can do it, so can I. But I still was hesitant and decided to wait. When I began taking classes at Santa Fe Community College, I decided it was time to take action. The college provided me with information about LVSF. I finally took that step.
The tutors brought up my vocabulary, and helped me to not be ashamed of my reading skills. They also have given me confidence to do what I need to do. My dream was to be a disc jockey - and that dream has come true. I became a DJ at KSFR 90.7 FM, at Santa Fe Community College, and now I am at KSWV AM 810.
Just last year I took a training workshop and now I am a tutor for Challenge New Mexico. I am also a member on the board of students for LVSF. I am currently trying to get more students more involved in this program.
I think helping other people to read and write, or speak English, is a whole new world. I promote this program on the radio, and through other means of media. It is a whole new world out there, and we need to be encouraging people to learn to read. Reading is the key to freedom!
