Featured Student of the Month: Dwain Moss February, 2002
Dwain Moss has taken his own advice and proven his theory that, You will only get out of life what you put into it. Dwain has put forth much effort in achieving the many goals he has set for himself.
Dwains troubles with his education began early. At the age of six, he was taken from his original classroom and placed in a special class. Although Dwain made it through high school, he said, I wanted to make something of my life, but I didnt know what.
In addition to his education, Dwain had many responsibilities as a young man. His father died when he was 13 years old, leaving Dwain to take care of his mother. He also worked part-time after school at a dry-cleaning store, which closed when Dwain was 18. He then began to work for Toccoa Casket Co., but after 11 years of service the company closed down. Dwain began working at Quincys Steak House as head cook. He still was longing to do something with his life and said, I did not give up.
Dwain saw an advertisement on TV and decided to apply for a tutor. His goal was to learn to read the Bible. Dwain began his tutoring with Toccoa-Stephens County Literacy Council, in Toccoa, GA in February of 1998, and has since achieved his goal. He is proud to say that he is able to read the Bible and understand it. His involvement with Stephens Education-Literacy Foundation (SELF), and the Literacy Council, has not only helped Dwain better his reading skills, it has increased his confidence and communication skills.
Dwain has involved himself in many activities since learning how to read. He has taken an interest in photography and recently won second place in a local art show for a picture of Toccoa Falls. He has also become involved in sign language classes and is able to sign as another means of communication. Dwains achievements have not gone without recognition. He had the honor of being the first student the Literacy Council sent to the LVA Conference in Kansas City, MO. Dwain enjoyed the experience and met many other students.
Dwain Moss has come a long way on the road to achieving his goals. He sends a message to fellow adult students, Dont give up. It will take time but it will be worth it. If you have a goal to meet or want to go to another level you can. It will help you to have more confidence and communication skills.
