Featured Student of the Month:
Carlos Trujillo

November, 2000

Carlos Trujillo has been selected as the Ruth J. Colvin English for Speakers of Other Languages Student of the Year for 2000. He received his award at LVAs National Conference 2000: Show Me the Future! in Kansas City, MO, on Oct. 7.

The staff at Literacy Connection of Elgin, IL was pleased to nominate Carlos Trujillo for the ESOL Student of the Year Award. Carlos is industrious, does his homework, and meets with his tutor three days a week for 3-1/2 hours each time. He uses every opportunity to learn English, carrying a note pad with him to write down new words to bring to his next lesson. He has received his drivers license and purchased a car.

Carlos used to be afraid of the police and our system of government. Now he is unafraid to speak to people in English. He presently works with the police department as a volunteer community liaison. He is studying to receive his citizenship papers. His tutor, Don Ross, thinks Carlos will make a great citizen.

Carlos has met his goals and will graduate officially this fall. However, he still plans to meet informally with his tutor. He takes college classes in speech and computer science. He promotes literacy in the community and has brought students and tutors into the program. He has been recognized in local newspapers as well as in the affiliate newsletter.

Because of his diligence and hard work, Carlos is able to study on his own and will continue to do just that. He is excited that he soon will be a tutor and able to help other students directly. It is important to him to be able to give back to others all that he has learned. He is an inspiration to all who know and work with him.
