LVA Board of Directors

Ruth Johnson Colvin
Founder, Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc.

Ruth Colvin is the founder and served as first president of Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. (LVA). At present she sits on the Curriculum and Field Services Committee of LVA and is a lifetime member of the Board of Directors. She continues to be active as a volunteer tutor in both Basic Literacy (BL) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), adapting new methods and approaches to continuously improve upon LVA's model of one-to-one and small group tutoring.

Since 1962, when Mrs. Colvin started LVA, she and her husband, Bob, have traveled all over the United States and the world giving BL and ESOL workshops. The recipient of seven honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degrees, Mrs. Colvin was awarded the United States of America's President's Volunteer Action Award, the nation's highest award given to a volunteer in 1987. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993.
