Pre-Conference - Wednesday
The LVA National Student Advisory Board will meet Tuesday, October 20, from 9 am to 5 pm. Student and practitioner observers are welcome. Lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 pm will be on your own. The Board will review a draft long-range plan for LVA student involvement. It will begin planning for its next set of projects. Also, the Board will vote on several recommendations to LVA's Board of Directors.
Opening Session featuring keynote speakers President and Mrs. George Bush

President and Mrs. George Bush have each raised millions of dollars for charitable causes during their lives. They have been very active since Mr. Bush retired from public life in 1993 after having served as the 41st President of the U.S. A decorated World War II Naval pilot before entering politics in his native Texas in 1963, Mr. Bush is the honorary chairman of the Points of Light Foundation, chair of the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships, and a member of the Board of Visitors at Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Mrs. Bush has long been known as a tireless advocate for literacy. Her seven-year-old organization, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, works to establish literacy as a value in every American family. A best-selling author and member of the Literacy Volunteers of America National Advisory Board, Mrs. Bush is an AmeriCares ambassador-at-large, a member of the Mayo Clinic Foundation Board, and a supporter of the Leukemia Society of America, Ronald McDonald Houses, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. They live in Houston, Texas, and Kennebunkport, Maine, and are the parents of five grown children: Dorothy, George W., Jeb, Marvin, and Neil. George W. Bush currently is Governor of Texas.

Pre-Conference Seminars

These seminars offer conferees cutting edge, professional development opportunities. These selections are field driven and designed to provide in-depth learning and encourage high-level discussion, colleague interaction and participation. An all-star line up of recognized leaders will be presenting.

  • Certificates of Completion will be awarded to all those sucessfully completing the seminars.
  • LVA reserves the right to cancel a seminar with less than 12 registrants.
  • Required reading material will be sent 2 - 3 weeks prior to the seminar to all those who register by September 18, 1998. Late registrants will receive material at Conference.
  • Seminars are designed for the primary audiences noted, but this does not preclude "interested others" from attending, except in Seminars 101,102,103, 107.

National Coalition for Literacy Meeting

The members of the National Coalition for Literacy will hold their quarterly business meeting on Wednesday, October 21 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Conferees are welcome to attend and observe.

Trainers will learn to use the principles of participatory adult education to train tutors, analyze and apply theory, and practice a workshop segment. LVA's Guide for Training Trainers will be followed, which uses well-designed, sequential learning tasks to engage analysis and application of new information. This seminar models the collaborative relationship LVA aspires to between tutor and students.

Required Reading:

  1. LVA's ESL Trainer's Guide and 4th edition of I Speak English or LVA's Basic Literacy Trainer's Guide (1994 edition) and 7th edition of Tutor (provided by the affiliate);
  2. Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach (provided by LVA)

Audience: LVA trainers and experienced tutors with a letter of recommendation from the affiliate leadership. Tutors must have completed LVA tutor training and tutored at least 24 hours.

The Why, What and How of LVA's Principles for Effective Training

Experienced LVA trainers will examine the Why, What and How of LVA's Principles for Effective Training (PET) and analyze training designs using PET as a guide. They will clarify their understanding of PET, describe the relationship between PET and LVA's accreditation system; and practice using PET in analyzing the design of a training session.
