Preconference Day, Wednesday, October 5th

Thursday, October 5th
Walter Anderson, chairman, publisher, and CEO of Parade Publications, was the keynote speaker at Thursday's Annual Banquet (left, with Ruth Colvin). Tom Harken, Walter Anderson, and a conference attendee take a moment to read over God�s Minute, one of Tom Harken�s favorite poems (below).

Donna Sherman, left, executive director of LVA-Rhode Island, received the Chairman's Award, given each year as an expression of appreciation from Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. for exemplary service to the organization. With Donna is Vikki Jo Stewart, chair of the LVA, Inc. Board of Directors.

LVA-Chippewa Valley/Eau Claire received the Exemplary Practices Award for its submission under Standard S8, �This organization utilizes a community needs assessment on a regular basis.� Carol Gabler, executive director of LV-CV, is second from the right.

Friday, October 6th
U.S. Assistant Secretary of Vocational and Adult Education Patricia McNeil received the Literacy Leadership Award this year. The Literacy Leadership Award is given each year as an expression of appreciation from LVA, Inc. for leadership and commitment to literacy. Ms. McNeil has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing the cause of adult literacy in its broadest sense, calling all providers in the Adult Education and Literacy System to unite in their commitment to providing top quality instruction to adult learners.

The Lakehurst Players, an adult literacy student troupe, performed at the student luncheon Friday. Their skits portrayed what life is like for someone who can�t read.

All the students who attended conference gathered for a group photo after the student luncheon on Friday.

People lined up quickly for free ice cream at the Ben & Jerry�s booth in the Exhibit Hall.

The poster session offered an opportunity where model programs showcased promising practices and innovative ideas.

Saturday, October 7th
Patricia Dilts is the Basic Literacy Tutor of the Year. Harry Seda received the
Ruth J. Colvin Student Leader of the Year award.
Carlos Trujillo was named the ESOL Student of the Year.

Conference attendees received a special surprise at the Saturday brunch - a visit from Mark Twain! The famous author regaled the crowd with tales and then concluded the 2000 Reason America Should Read campaign by assisting Vikki Jo Stewart, the chair of LVA's Board of Directors, with the drawing of the three winning reasons.
