Preconference Day, Wednesday, October 17th
Science fiction and fantasy author Barbara Hambley was the keynote speaker at the Opening Session.

Conference Program Manager Brenda Gray was one of the presenters for the preconference workshop, How to Grow a Family Literacy Program in a Few Essential and Practical Steps.

Thursday, October 18th
Dr. Randolph D. Smoak, immediate past president of the American Medical Association, was the keynote speaker at Thursday's Annual Banquet.

LVA-Wisconsin Institutions won the Exemplary Practices Award for its model processes and procedures for building literacy programs in the corrections community. Academic coordinator Peggy Meyers, second from left, is pictured with Ruth Colvin, center, and other representatives from the affiliate.

Andy Hartman, former director if the National Institute for Literacy, received a special Lifetime Literacy Leadership Award for his dedication to the cause of adult literacy. With Andy is LVA President Marsha Tait.

Friday, October 19th
Jerry Greenfield, of Ben & Jerry�s Ice Cream, spoke at the Student Recognition Breakfast.

All the students who attended conference gathered for a group photo after the student breakfast.

Saturday, October 20th
Dale Sherman is the Student Leader of the Year. Virginia Martinez received the Ruth J. Colvin Student of the Year award. Don Desmond was named the Tutor of the Year.

Marge Ruth was unable to attend the conference, but was named the Administrative Volunteer of the Year.


LVA spokesperson Wally Amos, pictured with Jerry Greenfield, left, hosted Saturday's Closing Brunch. During the brunch, LVA founder Ruth Colvin was honored for her efforts in the literacy field. LVA Board member Annette Sessions, also a former student, above, sang to Ruth a song about the importance of telling people how valued they are.


LVA's Conference 2001: A Literacy Odyssey was the last LVA conference! For 2002, LVA is partnering with Laubach Literacy to present Literacy for All in San Diego, California, May 29-June 1. Watch this space for more information!
