Preconference Workshops

Two-day preconference workshops begin on Tuesday, May 28th, and end on Wednesday, May 29th. One-day preconference workshops are on Wednesday only.

PW 1 - One-day workshop
Putting EFF to Work in Literacy Programs

Equipped for the Future (EFF) is the National Institute for Literacy�s ten-year initiative to design an accountable adult literacy system. This session will include new training modules for tutors and staff and examples of how volunteer literacy programs are using EFF in goal setting, assessment, lesson planning, data collection, and reporting.

PW 2 - One-day workshop
Teaching Reading to Adults in a Technological Age

This joint preconference symposium will provide an information session on current best practices for learning disabilities and instruction. The focus will be on integration of a variety of technology devices and software items that are appropriate for adults with learning disabilities. A brief lecture will be followed by hands-on demonstrations and small group work.

PW 3 - One-day workshop
Leadership Training for Students

Participants will learn about some of the basic skills needed for effective leadership. Workshop topics will include: public speaking and getting your message across, identifying different types of student involvement and ways to increase it, and advocacy both inside and outside of your organization, including public policy. By the end of the workshop, participants will have learned about leadership and have had opportunities for practice. They will also leave with a personal plan to strengthen their skills, including a list of helpful resources.

PW 4 - Two-day workshop
Making Your Literacy Services More Effective: Addressing the Impact of Race and Racism

Participants will gain a common understanding, language, and analysis of race, culture, and racism that will help them build effective relationships with students and increase community support for literacy. The 1-1/2-day workshop will speak to the challenge of being truly student- and community-centered, explore implications for tutor training, and provide resources and tools to assess your organization's cultural competence. The preconference includes an evening meal with cultural sharing among participants and members of the San Diego literacy community.

This preconference builds on over five years of conversations, collaborations, and training among a variety of literacy professionals and organizations, including the American Library Association Office of Literacy and Outreach Services, Laubach Literacy Action, Literacy Volunteers of America, Literacy South, South Central Literacy Action, and YMCA Educational Services (New Orleans, LA).

PW 5 - One-day workshop
Decision Making Made Simple: Using Evaluation Data to Develop, Manage, and Report Program Results

Managing program results is critical for the development and management of literacy programs. The presenter will discuss ways that program data are managed and demonstrate how a Web-based approach is used to help manage results.

PW 6 - Two-day workshop
LVA Training of Trainers

This two-day preconference workshop is designed for trainers who already know the content of their tutor-training program and want to learn how to teach by using participatory principles:

  • Discover how to analyze and apply these principles.
  • Experience the process involved by practicing a workshop segment and receiving feedback on your presentation.

Registration is limited to 24 participants. NOTE: Registration deadline for this workshop must be at least one month prior since participants must read materials before participating in this workshop.

Prerequisites: Read Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach, by Jane Vella (provided in advance); complete a learning needs assessment.

PW 7 - Two-day workshop
50/50 Management System: Maintaining the Balance

Using sound program management principles is essential. Learn how to apply 50/50 management principles to make decisions about your program�s growth and development. Discover ways to reach program objectives through a balanced use of resources. Learn how to assess your program�s organizational stage and more. Prerequisite: Read Maintaining the Balance: A Guide to 50/50 Management. This will be provided to you after you register.

Strategic Alliances; What, When, Why, and How?

Strategic alliances can significantly benefit your organization by furthering your programmatic mission and increasing administrative efficiencies. Participants will determine if they are ready for alliances, will learn to plan and develop the type of partnership(s) right for them, and they will learn to evaluate the impact of these efforts.

PW 9 - Two-day workshop
LLA Basic Training Skills Workshop

In this hands-on, interactive workshop, you will work with other trainers to learn practical information about learning and training styles, adult learning theory, participatory activity design, and basic training skills. You will also have an opportunity to design and present a learning activity. This workshop meets one of the requirements for LLA Trainer Certification.

PW 10 - One-day workshop
Women, Trauma, and Learning

This workshop will introduce program administrators, teachers, and tutors to research on the impact of violence on women�s learning and the ways practitioners are using and developing this new information further. Presenters will talk about changes they and other educators have made to all aspects of programs to enhance women's learning. Participants will have hands-on experience with strategies they can use with learners in their programs and work towards action steps to strengthen their own work.

PW 11 - One-day workshop
Phonemic Awareness: What Is It and How Should I Incorporate It in My Lessons?

�Phonemic awareness� (the ability to consciously attend to the sounds of a language) has become one of the hottest topics in reading instruction. What does it really mean, and why is it important for students to have phonemic awareness before they can make progress in reading? In this workshop participants will explore what it is, ways to assess it, and activities for tutors to use to facilitate development of phonemic awareness in adult students.

PW 12 - One-day workshop
Making the Connection: Locating and Using Technology Resources in Your Program

Technology, as well as individual program capacity, is constantly growing and changing. Communication, delivery of training, access to resources, and integration into teaching and learning are important topics for administrators, instructors, and learners. The ability to access tools and resources, as well as strategies on how to use them in all areas of a program, is more valuable today than ever before.

LINCS is the Literacy Information and Communication System developed by practitioners for practitioners through the National Institute For Literacy. LINCS offers a variety of resources and services designed to aid the literacy field.

This preconference workshop will discuss, with LINCS as a primary source, identifying and using technology services and resources that can be used in instruction, training, and program management. The session will also address strategies and methods used to integrate technology into these areas of a program.

The morning will focus on locating resources quickly and specifically, focusing on search strategies and LINCS services. The afternoon will discuss ways to use these resources, and integrating this and other technologies into your program.

PW 13 - One-day workshop
Board Development for the Good, the Bad, and the Moderately Okeydokey

This board development workshop is for you if your board is bored and you do not know what the future holds for your affiliate. One-third of your board does THE work, one-third watches them do the work, and one-third does not know there is work. As a board member, you've just been attending meetings and go home from meetings wondering why you spend time with those people. As a staff person, you don't know how to motivate your board, as a board member you don't know how to motivate your staff. You are looking for the magic pill or the golden bullet or the right chair or the right donor or �. You wonder if the current board paradigm (model) could be changed to a new way of thinking!

PW 14 - One-day workshop
Everything You Wanted to Know About Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages But Were Afraid to Ask

This practical, interactive workshop focuses on those elements of learning first and second languages that help tutors and programs work effectively with ESL populations. Participants will talk about first and second language acquisition, development of oral and written vocabulary, reading, curriculum, methods of instruction, assessment, etc. The goal is to give participants knowledge and skills that they can use immediately: to give tutors nuts-and-bolts ideas to use in the very next meeting with learners, to give trainers additional information to incorporate in their training, and to give program directors a knowledge base from which to make decisions. Come prepared to laugh, talk, listen, think, and learn.
