Conference 2003
ProLiteracy Worldwide's first conference was a terrific success by all accounts. At least 150 registrants made Capitol Hill visits on November 13 and at least 300 registrants attended the legislative reception that evening. New York Senator Charles Schumer made a rousing speech in support of adult literacy and increased appropriations.
In total more than 800 people participated in some part of the conference, held November 13-17 in Washington, D.C.
Keynote speakers included author and speaker Mark Victor Hansen, news commentator Ray Suarez, and First Lady of Iowa and Verizon Literacy Champion Christie Vilsack. Elisa Murillo, a student who recently received the ALA Paul Howard Award for Courage, spoke at the Student Recognition Luncheon.
