How Can I Help?

Family Literacy

One major reason that non-reading and non-English speaking adults choose to join an LVA program is their desire to help their children succeed educationally. LVA has made a long-term commitment to developing and maintaining family literacy programs to enable families to improve their skills by working together.

LVA's family literacy programs:

  • encourage adults to pursue more education
  • encourage literacy activities in the home
  • encourage families to work together
  • promote lifelong learning
  • strengthen family ties

In homes where reading materials are plentiful, children have higher average reading proficiencies, according to the 1996 National Assessment of Educational Progress. The same study, which involved 27,400 public and non-public school students, showed that children from homes where there are frequent discussions about school and reading also have higher average proficiencies.
