LVA provides volunteer tutors with the professional training, materials, and
support that enables them to teach either Basic Literacy or English for Speakers of
Other Languages (ESOL). Once trained, volunteer tutors typically meet with their
students for approximately 1� -2 hours per week for one year, although many volunteers
stay with their LVA program for years and continue to give the gift of literacy to
dozens of their neighbors.
Most affiliates offer volunteer opportunities besides and in addition to tutoring:
fund-raising, special event coordination, publicity, administrative support, and/or
board service.
