Fannie Mae Foundation home-buying guides available
The FannieMae Foundation provides free home-buying readiness curriculum resources for adult learners.
The Foundation has created a first-of-its-kind English for Speakers of Other Languages
(ESOL) module, entitled "How to Buy a Home in the United States," which has
been used in classroom settings to teach adult students about the home-buying
process while successfully integrating language development. The module is
designed to present home ownership information to ESOL learners in basic terms
they can understand. The material aims to be inspirational and show students
that owning a home is a realistic goal they can work towards.
The ESOL module was developed to help immigrants understand the home-buying
process. These materials integrate practical knowledge about home ownership as
they promote English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills for
intermediate to advanced learners of ESOL. To receive your FREE teachers
guide and up to 20 student workbooks, call 1-800-544-9224.
The Literacy and Adult Basic Education Homeownership Program promotes basic
literacy and math skills through its curriculum, entitled "How to Buy Your Own
Home." It is the only workbook of its kind specifically designed for literacy
and Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes. Designed to present home-buying
information to your adult learners, "How to Buy Your Own Home" can be used to
supplement and enhance existing class materials. The curriculum is a
self-contained program that includes all the information needed to facilitate
classroom discussions and promote learning about the home-buying process.
The "How to Buy Your Own Home" curriculum is organized into four units that
cover the process of home ownership through "real-world" situations. Topics
range from why people buy a home to the search for affordable housing to qualifying for a mortgage to owning and maintaining a home. As students
explore home ownership, theyll expand their vocabularies by doing various
writing and comprehension exercises, as well as listening, reading, writing,
and using English to discuss new concepts and express their ideas. Both
student and teachers guides are multi-color and complete with illustrations.
