Walter Anderson, chairman, CEO, and publisher of Parade Publications, will be the keynote speaker at the Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc. (LVA, Inc.) annual conference, Show Me the Future!, in Kansas City, MO, on Oct. 5, 2000. A longtime champion of adult literacy, Anderson serves on the LVA, Inc. National Advisory Board.
Walter Andersons personal and professional commitment to literacy has meant greater public awareness of the issue, said Marsha L. Tait, LVA, Inc. president. LVA is proud of our long relationship to Mr. Anderson, and is indebted to him for his many years of support.
Anderson, a high school dropout who obtained his GED in the Marine Corps and later went on to become the valedictorian of his graduating class at Mercy College in Westchester, NY, has been awarded four honorary doctorates and is the author of several books. He received the LVA Stars in Literacy Award with Barbara Bush and Wally Amos in 1990. Anderson is also host of the Read Together series for children on public television.
LVA students are courageous, hard-working individuals who deserve our applause for transforming their lives and achieving their goals by gaining or improving their literacy skills. Literacy empowers! Anderson said.
The U.S. Department of Education estimates that between 40 and 44 million adults in the U.S. function at the lowest level of literacy skill. LVA, Inc. is a national not-for-profit organization, managed by professionals, which delivers local literacy services through a network of more than 350 volunteer literacy programs serving more than 70,000 adult literacy students and their families yearly. LVA, Inc. defines adult literacy as the ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently, to compute and solve problems, and to use technology in order to become life-long learners and to be effective in the family, in the workplace, and in the community.
