SYRACUSE, NEW YORK Syracuse-based Literacy Organizations Make Worth Magazine's '100 Best Charities List'
Laubach Literacy International (LLI) and Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc., (LVA) have been named two of the nations top 100 charities by Worth magazine. Both organizations, which are based in Syracuse, NY, made the 100 Best Charities list after Worth reviewed their tax returns, annual reports, and consulted with philanthropy experts on which charities they thought were effective in carrying out their missions.
"Worth magazine's recognition of LVA and LLI affirms our efforts to maintain fiscal responsibility while providing quality literacy services, says Marsha Tait, president of LVA. Once our two organizations have merged, we expect to continue the same high level of funding in support of quality programming both domestically and abroad.
Worths list of the 100 Best Charities included agencies that meet the urgent, basic needs of the poor, as well as organizations that provide the education, economic, safe environments, and good health opportunities that help to restore an unbalanced life to equilibrium.
Worth is to be commended for including two of the nations leading literacy organizations on its recommended list of educational charities, says Robert Wedgeworth, president of LLI. We know that low literacy is a common denominator among poor individuals and families. Helping people to break out-and to stay out-of poverty requires strategies that support economic security. Literacy is one of the most important tools we have to do that kind of work.
Both LLI and LVA are proud of the many ways we fund literacy programs, adds Mr. Wedgeworth. In fact, over the last three years, LLI has committed 85 percent of its revenues to programs-a figure that is actually higher than the Worth article reported.
Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America, two of the oldest and largest volunteer literacy organizations in the world, announced their intention to merge earlier this year. The boards of each organization have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that combines the current operations of LLI and LVA and locates the new literacy organization at Laubach Literacys headquarters at 1320 Jamesville Avenue in Syracuse, NY. The organization resulting from the merger will be renamed and will commence operations sometime in late 2002.
