Literacy for Social Change Action Areas
Participants in ProLiteracy programs identify major needs in their families and communities in one or more of six action areas: health, economic self-reliance, environment, education, peace, and human rights/status of women. Effectively addressing daily challenges in these action areas requires an approach that accounts for the ways that they overlap and intersect.

Economic Self-reliance
Micro-enterprise, micro-credit or agricultural projects and improvements to community infrastructure
Health
Medical facilities and services, as well as campaigns to prevent or treat disease
Education
Basic literacy or educational programs and schools for children or adults
Environment
Projects that protect natural resources or alleviate the impact of environmental degradation
Human Rights/Status of Women
Systematic efforts to advocate on behalf of human rights and to decrease abuse and exploitation of women
Peace
Events that resolve conflict or increase understanding among disparate populations
