Literacy for Social Change Manuals
Each manual in the Literacy Solutions series focuses on a specific community development issue. The manuals contain simple drawings of situations that learners see in their everyday lives, such as planting crops. Discussion questions, key vocabulary words, and important ideas accompany each drawing.
Teachers use the drawings and discussion questions to lead learners through a process that helps them not only identify solutions to local problems but becomes a literacy lesson, as well. For example, a discussion about better health care may include identifying words such as sick, health, and germ. The facilitator then may ask participants to identify particular letters in the words, the sound two letters together make, common letters in different words, etc.
Community members and in-country organizations translate the manuals into their native languages and adapt the drawings to reflect local lifestyles.
