Readability
Readability is a method of calculation that reflects the reading level of the material. Readability calculations are normally based on the assumption that the text being evaluated is running prose of some length and non-technical in nature. Puzzles do not always fall comfortably into this category, so we have chosen two methods of calculating readability and listed them both for each puzzle.
Spache vs. Powers
The Spache formula is vocabulary-based while the Powers formula counts words, syllables, and sentences. Both formulas were chosen for working best with elementary level materials. To further assist you in identifying appropriate materials to use with your student we have also included a difficulty level.
We hope you enjoy using these puzzles. We will continue to add new puzzles throughout the year, so please visit often to see what is new!
