ProLiteracy Worldwide Annual Conference

Student Recognition Luncheon

ProLiteracy Worldwide Conference 2004

The festivities included comments from former student and Oklahoma resident, Toni Cordell and Emma Torrez, Student Advisory Council President. Along with the traditional annual student pin recognition ceremony, the Dollar General awards were presented to the Student of the Year, the Tutor of the Year, and the Tutor and Student of the Year Pair:

Sonya Moore
Dollar General
Student of the Year

Sonya hid her poor reading skills for years. When a change at work required her to look for a new job, Sonya revealed her secret to her job counselor. He put Sonya in touch with Literacy Kansas City, where Sonya met with her tutor two evenings a week for three and a half years.

Earlier this year, Sonya graduated from high school. This single mother of two boys has inspired others by sharing her story through local and national magazine and newspapers, and speaking engagements throughout her community.

Mary overcame her own struggles with dyslexia to become an elementary school teacher and reading specialist.

Three years ago she began volunteering as a tutor with Literacy Kansas City; she also has helped in developing assessment methods for the program and served on the Board of Directors.

 Erik Sarjeant and David Girod

Erik was a high school student who recognized his need for help when he came to Fayetteville Urban Ministry in 2001. David was a busy pastor, but found time to work with the young man he calls a model student.

Erik has since graduated from high school and is enrolled in a residential vocational rehabilitation school and continues to work with David.

For Fun:
Members of the Oklahoma State University Native American Student Association Dance Troupe provided a demonstration and a few dance lessons!

Eighty-five adult literacy students attended the conference.
