Trainer Certification

ProLiteracy grants trainer certification in basic literacy, English as a second language, or both.

Trainers are allowed 18 months from the time of application to complete the certification requirements. Trainers are granted certification for a four-year term, at which time they may apply for recertification.

Getting Started
To become certified by ProLiteracy, trainers must:

• Obtain a Statement of Organizational Endorsement from the state or local organization.
• Sign a trainer ethics statement.
• Demonstrate satisfactory Trainer Competencies through use of the Trainer Observation Guide.
• Demonstrate proficiency in adult education and literacy content by receiving a passing score on a content exam.
• Submit a processing fee. ($80 if the endorsing program is a ProLiteracy organizational member; $205 if the program is not a member)

Preparing for Certification
ProLiteracy provides diverse resources to assist trainers in meeting certification requirements. These include:

• A free online Trainer Tool Kit with materials related to training, adult basic education and literacy, and ESL.
• An online feature, My Certification, that allows certification candidates to track their progress. For trainers not yet certified, this page indicates which certification requirements have been met.
• Access to professional development opportunities at a discount.
• Trainer Discussion list where trainers can ask questions, discuss ideas, and share resources.
