SUMMARY

Chapter Three
Reading

Chapter Three presents an overview of reading, presenting you with information and models you will need as you tutor. Key to this chapter are these ideas:

  • A good reader is an "active" reader.
  • You can help a child learn strategies to become a better reader.
  • A few minutes spent looking over a text and talking about it before, during, and after actual reading can make a difference in comprehension.
  • Different kinds of texts require different reading skills.
  • Reading means understanding a text; reading comprehension is more than sounding out or calling or knowing the meaning of words on a page.
  • A reader is better able to understand a passage on a subject he knows something about and/or has an interest in.
  • Fluency comes from reading, re-reading, and reading yet again.
