Dr. Jennifer James, a
cultural anthropologist, opened the conference with a rousing speech
about leadership in times of change and about how LLI and LVA are
facing those changes.

The Playwrights Project presented "The Best
Mistake," a play about a young girls' discovery that her father
can't read.

The Student Recognition Breakfast honored students
attending the conference and their achievements.

The 2002 Awards

CEO, and publisher of Parade Publications, spoke about his experiences
growing up in an abusive home where his father discouraged him from
reading. |

Friday night's DJ Party attracted hundreds of conference
attendees for an evening of music and dancing. |

Bob Wedgeworth, president of LLI, and Vikki Jo Stewart,
chair of the LVA Board of Directors, presented the logo for the new,
merged organization, ProLiteracy Worldwide. |
