June 2005
PROLITERACY SEEKS TO REMIND OF APPROCHING DEADLINES

  • June 27, 2005 - ProLiteracy America award nomination deadline. Awards for student, tutor, trainer, and volunteer excellence and program innovation will be given at the conference. Award winners receive $1,500 for travel expenses and $500 worth of New Readers Press materials.
  • June 30, 2005 - Spring special conference rate deadline. Register now for the best conference rates. Rates for affiliates and non-affiliates go up after June 30.
  • July 11, 2005 - Dollar General award nomination deadline. Dollar General will present two awards that are separate from the ProLiteracy America awards: Dollar General Student of the Year and Dollar General Tutor of the Year.
  • August 31, 2005 - Student scholarship application. ProLiteracy has 25 student scholarship awards available to help students attend the conference. Scholarship awards will be given on a first come, first served basis.

Registration brochures and award nomination information have been mailed, and both are available on this Web site. More information about the other deadlines listed above is also included on the Web site. Student scholarship applications will be mailed soon and shortly thereafter will be available on the Web site.

MICHAEL KROTH, PH.D., TO JOIN THE RANKS OF SPEAKERS AT THE PROLITERACY WORLDWIDE CONFERENCE -
Michael Kroth, Ph.D., specializes in processes that cultivate passionate work for both individuals and organizations. Dr. Kroth has developed and administered corporate-level leadership development and succession planning programs, been the administrator of a corporate foundation, and served as a director of corporate community affairs.

The members of the ProLiteracy Worldwide Conference Team are seeking presentation proposals for the 2005 conference.  If you feel you have a particular expertise in one or more of the following areas, please submit a call for presenter application form by March 25, 2005.   • Linking Research to Practice (instruction, training, management)
  • Promoting Literacy Awareness and Advocacy (advocacy, public awareness, marketing)
  • Student
  • Innovative Practices in Literacy and Adult Education (basic literacy, training, workforce education, math, family literacy, correctional education, workplace, technology, etc.)
  • Program Improvement and Accountability (organizational planning and evaluation, volunteer administration, fund development, accreditation, and hot topics in leadership)

INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATION PRESIDENT AND AN AWARD-WINNING POET TO SPEAK AT PROLITERACY CONFERENCE -
Education expert Willard (Bill) R. Daggett, Ed.D., president of the International Center for Leadership in Education, opens ProLiteracy�s 2005 Annual Conference on Wednesday evening, October 26 in Tucson, Ariz. Daggett is recognized worldwide for creating student and skill oriented educational systems. Jimmy Santiago Baca provides the keynote address at the annual banquet on Friday, Oct. 28, 2005. Baca turned from troubled teen to award-winning poet after learning to read and write at age 21-while serving a five-year sentence at a maximum-security prison.

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION WINNERS ANNOUNCED -
The members of the ProLiteracy Worldwide Conference Team would like to extend their appreciation to everyone who submitted 2004 conference evaluation forms. The conference evaluations are used to plan future conferences, and the responses are compared each year to ensure that ProLiteracy delivers a conference that meets the needs of those in the field. Five names were randomly drawn from those who submitted a 2004 conference evaluation form to win free 2005 conference registrations. The winners are:
